📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- A two-story four-plex fire displaced six residents on Sunday. The Long Beach Fire Department responded just after 2 p.m. to the 2100 block of Orange Avenue. “The fire was contained to just the unit itself . . . and was declared knocked down in under five minutes,” officials explained. There’s no word yet on the cause. (Long Beach Post)
- Virgin Orbit, currently doing business out of Douglas Park next to the Long Beach Airport, is planning an expansion. Last week’s report outlines that the company requested (and received) permission to expand, to the tune of “four new buildings totaling 315,000 square feet.” “It appears that construction will be near the corporate building at 4022 East Conant Street.” (BeachComber)
- MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center is among the hospitals to participate in a nationwide study of an “innovative liquid that stops bleeding in patients.” We learned on Monday that the new Embrace HES trial evaluates the “method’s ability to embolize arterial bleeds in veins and arteries throughout the body, including near the stomach, liver and kidneys.” Another application could be to “close off vessels supplying blood to a tumor.” (Press-Telegram/paywall)
- Have you been to the new Sushi Nikkei at 5020 2nd Street yet? The Belmont Shore location opened in late December after the Bixby Knolls eatery at 3819 Atlantic Avenue was doing exceptionally well. In addition to developing a loyal following, the Bixby Knolls location hosted an undercover Michelin Guide reviewer who ended up officially recommending the restaurant. Sushi Nikkei has now joined a short list of four local venues that can make this claim. (The HiLo)
- The Cooper Steinhauser Foundation is hosting a fundraiser on January 26. Come eat at the Panxa Cocina at 3937 East Broadway between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. The foundation receives 10% of sales. (CSFoundation 22)
