📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) arrested a 35-year-old man and former City of Long Beach employee, in a 2020 murder case. At that time, a 36-year-old woman died in a home near the 1700 block of Cedar Avenue of an apparent “accidental overdose of methamphetamine and alcohol.” However, the man came to the police station on Monday, taking responsibility for giving the woman narcotics and saying “he is responsible for her death.” (LBPD, Patch)
- Burglars robbed two more Long Beach businesses over the last couple of days. They hit Soggy Dog at 2001 East 7th Street and Holé Molé at 421 Obispo Avenue. “The worst part of all is trying to function afterward and pretend everything is normal,” the owner of Soggy Dog said. The LBPD is increasing patrols. However, Soggy Dog’s owner warns that small business owners aren’t safe; “if it can happen to me, it can happen to you. Just be prepared.” (Long Beach Post)
- On Tuesday, the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) responded to the 900 block of Pine Avenue. Initially, firefighters were told that “a large, vacant commercial building” was on fire. However, they only found a “small contents fire after arriving.” Firefighters quickly extinguished it, and investigators now look for its cause. (Long Beach Fire)
- The Walter Pyramid’s roof is leaking! Built back in 1994, it’s been the location for countless Long Beach State University (LBSU) games. Foreseeing the eventual failure of the roof, the administration determined in 2021 that a roof replacement and “related deferred maintenance items” would come with a price tag exceeding $55 million. Last week’s rains haven’t helped, and the pyramid, which originally cost $22 million to build, ended up having “trash cans and a kid's swimming pool” placed throughout the interior to catch dripping water. The idea is now to increase the activities fees by $64 to raise funds needed to fix the roof. (Daily 49er)
- The Ed ''Pops'' Davenport Park at 2910 East 55th Way will have the funding necessary for its 6.5-acre planned expansion. The City Council approved the funding Tuesday to create a green space measuring a total of 11.5 acres. Installations will include “a new multipurpose sports field, exercise equipment, outdoor bleachers and seating areas, a walking trail, and additional parking.” The city awarded the contract for the work to the Bitech Construction Company, with an anticipated completion date in the summer of next year.
