Here are the top five stories in Long Beach today:
- Back on March 3 at 8:35 a.m., there was a carjacking on the 2100 block of Williams Street. On Thursday, the PD arrested an 18-year-old Las Vegas resident in connection with the crime. He was “booked on one count of attempted murder, one count of carjacking and one count of possession of methamphetamine. Bail was set at $1,000,000.” (LBPD)
- Should a 58-year-old man be able to sue the city “because the local animal control service would not remove homeless kittens possibly carrying fleas near his home?” Animal Care Services refused to pick up 13 cats from a public alley behind the plaintiff’s house and instead told him to feed the cats “until they reached a weight and age that the city would accept them.” The plaintiff claims he was bitten by what he believes were fleas on the kittens, which resulted in his contracting typhus. On Thursday, a LB Superior Court judge ruled he “can take his case to trial.” (Press-Telegram)
- As of Saturday, the voting centers at the Houghton Park Community Center Social Hall, LBCC Room T1200, LBCC Pacific Coast Campus Room GG238, the Salvation Army, the Senior Center and the Masonic Center Hall are open. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Another set of voting centers will open Saturday. (LB Post)
- Have you noticed that every weekend there seems to be a parade or food festival? We learned on Friday that the city is subsidizing these events to “help boost Long Beach’s recovery.” If your organization has been considering hosting a special event, there are various grants available. They range from $3,000 to $25,000. (LB Business Journal)
- What are your plans for Memorial Day weekend? Last Saturday, we talked about the events honoring fallen service members this weekend. Today, let’s look at the fun events that are going on this weekend. There is Zendejas San Dimas, which is putting on a Jam starting at 2 p.m. On Monday, there is Rock for Vets at Jimmy E’s Bar + Grill. (Patch, LB Local News)
