First, today's weather:

Plenty of sunshine. High: 86 Low: 59.

Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:

  1. The Nextdoor App blew up on Sunday about the Food-4-Less at 1600 East Willow Street. “A large group of people were inside the store and stealing unspecified items.” In the early afternoon, between 200 and 300 bicyclists descended on the store like a swarm of locusts and applied the old five-finger discount. Police officers told the group to “leave the private property.” You know what they didn’t do? Make arrests! (LBReport)
  2. LB’s Westside is situated to the west of the 710 Freeway. The local ZIP of 90810 has the troubling distinction of having LB’s highest COVID-19 fatality rates. Now, the neighborhood is struggling with the air pollution coming from the nearby port’s congestion. Residents deal not just with the freeway pollution, but also with the nearby oil refineries. Residents noticed the “area has been blanketed in a thick haze.” Members of the West Long Beach Neighborhood Association point out that they “are being unfairly choked at the dirty end of the nation’s supply chain.” (LB Post)
  3. The inimitable Justin Rudd is putting on the 20th annual Haute Dog Howl'oween Parade this Sunday! Taking place at Marina Vista Park, 5355 East Eliot Street, humans are free to watch the dogs and join the parade. Doggies pay for the honor to strut their stuff. Don’t have a doggie? Don’t worry! There will be pet adoptions and a vendor fair from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The parade itself is at 2:30 p.m. The last time, the event featured 400 costumed dogs and 3,000 “dog-less gawkers.” (Haute Dogs)
  4. Assembly Member Patrick O’Donnell is seizing the opportunity to nudge the state once again to set aside money to pay for “the eventual abandonment of Long Beach oil wells.” So far, his “bill has been languishing in committee for eight months.” AB 353 is supposed to get the money flowing again. Truth be told, he had introduced this bill as AB 2687 last year, but it died in committee. Before that, it didn’t make it through the Senate vote because of financial concerns regarding the state’s general fund. Even so, O’Donnell has high hopes that the January 2022 hearing in committee will be different this time. (LB Post)
  5. The Alpert JCC at 3801 East Willow Street is hosting the 2021 Jewish Film Festival. Running from November 3 to 21, there will be five films. Audiences have the option of attending live premieres, attending receptions at the VIP Lounge, and streaming the films. (Alpert JCC)
