🦃 Thanksgiving Poll!
Thanksgiving is on November 24th. How do you celebrate? So far, 44.4% celebrate a big meal as a family tradition, while 29.6% don’t celebrate and treat it like any other day. In a smaller group, 1.2% don’t celebrate because they feel it glorifies the conquest of Native Americans; however, 24.7% choose to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving out of gratitude.
📰 Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
1) “This school is lucky they don’t let me bring my 9 mm Glock, or else I would have shot four students already,” a Wilson High School teacher is accused of threatening the kids in his class during the first week in November. The accusation comes from a student’s aunt, who posted it on Instagram after she was told by the school that “they would need a lot of proof to go ahead and do something.” (Mariscos El Garage)
2) There was a traffic fatality at 7th Street and Rose Avenue on Wednesday at 3:20 a.m. An adult male pedestrian was stuck by a 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer. The 23-year-old driver remained on the scene and cooperated with law enforcement. “At this time, speed is being investigated as a factor in the collision. Neither distracted driving nor impaired driving appears to be a factor.” (Long Beach Police Department)
3) The Onni East Village is a 432-apartment complex under construction at 200 North Long Beach Boulevard. We learned on Wednesday that “32 apartments are to be operated as hotel suites by Level, including one- and two-bedroom spaces ranging from 709 to 1,118 square feet in size.” It looks like Onni changed plans to benefit Level Hotels & Furnished Suites, which it owns, after construction began. (L.A. Urbanize)
4) Southwest Airlines plans to add a daily non-stop flight to Salt Lake City beginning January 5. The flight will take off from the Long Beach Airport and replace two flights the airline operates out of Orange County’s John Wayne Airport. Already, Southwest has begun offering flights to Nashville and announced that it will add flights to New Orleans next year. (Long Beach Business Journal)
5) The Long Beach LGBTQ Center is reaching out to the community with a “Giving Thanks meal distribution” on November 23 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you plan on taking the friendly folks at the center up on their offer, please sign up for a time slot to pick up a meal. Choices include a vegetarian option and baked chicken with macaroni and cheese. (Q Voice News)
