Here are the top five stories today in Long Beach:
- The Grand Prix runs from April 8 to 10. “Over the next couple of weeks, SCNG’s 11 newspapers will print free general admission tickets — with a $37 value — to attend the Grand Prix on Friday, April 8.” The papers are: Long Beach Press-Telegram, Daily Breeze, Los Angeles Daily News, Pasadena Star-News, Whittier Daily News, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Orange County Register, Riverside Press-Enterprise, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, San Bernardino Sun, and Redlands Daily Facts. (Press-Telegram)
- Pancho's Vegan Tacos at 1837 East 7th Street opened on April 2, 2021. On Saturday, it closed. Initially, the company closed temporarily for kitchen renovations. However, the eatery’s Instagram post on Saturday noted that the closure is indefinite. (panchosvegantacos)
- A former CSULB student “was arrested Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of exposing himself to students inside the university’s library multiple times this week.” “University officials have filed a stay-away order against him and are asking anyone with information to contact detectives at 562-985-4101.” (LB Post)
- The city is kicking tires on “an innovative zero-emissions cargo transportation system that could reduce pollution and speed up goods movement at the Port of Long Beach.” It would involve “a futuristic rail system that could be suspended above existing roads.” Initial estimates suggest a $500 million price tag. (LB Post)
- Do you shop at Trader Joe's? Do you buy the Crunchy Slaw with Chicken salad? Toss it! We learned Saturday that “there could be hard plastic in the dressing.” (ABC)
Today in Long Beach:
- ‘Maya-Animals’ Brunch Experience with ‘Dexter The Monkey’ at Hotel Maya (12 PM to 3 PM)
- TROPICALIA Tropical Plant Market returns to The Bamboo Club (11:30 AM to 4 PM)
- Camerata Singers present ChoralFest Long Beach: Northern Lights at the Beverly O'Neill Theater (4:30 PM)
- Celebrating Tom Jones, starring David Burnham at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center (7 PM)
From my notebook:
- A Naples neighbor found a single key on a key ring adjacent to the fountain in Naples. Is it yours? (Nextdoor)
- Is anyone interested in spreading pure happiness? Cindy’s son has Down syndrome and will be turning 21 on March 22. When he gets a birthday card, it’s like winning the lottery. She rented a UPS box and thought she’d make a post asking if anyone wanted to if they could mail him a birthday card. He has no idea she’s doing this. Whenever he gets mail, he will open it so carefully and wants me to read every word to him. He cherishes the cards he gets. If you would like to participate, please send your birthday greetings to:
