The cause of death is not known.

Investigations were underway Saturday into the death of a woman in her 40s who was found unconscious in a cell at the Long Beach City Women's Jail.

She was the third person to die in Long Beach police custody in the past two months, reported the Long Beach Press-Telegram.

The woman, who was arrested Thursday after she came to police headquarters around 2:35 p.m. "yelling and screaming'' and was discovered to have outstanding misdemeanor warrants, was found unresponsive around 5:15 a.m. Friday, according to a police statement.

"During jail rounds throughout the night, nothing unusual relating to the female's condition was noted,'' the statement said.

During morning rounds, however, jail staff attempted to wake her for breakfast, but she did not respond, police said. A nurse and doctor were summoned and the woman was found to be deceased, according to police.

The name of the woman, believed to be a Long Beach resident, was withheld pending family notifications.

Her death is being investigated by Long Beach homicide detectives and the offices of the Los Angeles County District Attorney and coroner.

A male who allegedly entered employee vehicles on private property died in police custody after going into medical distress in late May and in late April, a 50-year-old woman arrested on a narcotics charge died in a jail holding cell after she too experienced medical distress, the Press-Telegram reported.
