📰 Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:

  1. On Christmas Day, a street takeover event resulted in the death of a 24-year-old woman. After striking her, the driver of a Chevrolet Camaro fled the scene. On Tuesday, the Los Angeles Police Department announced the arrest of a 28-year-old man from Orange County “on a charge of murder” in the case. He was located in Albuquerque. The police are still looking for two additional suspects. (Centre Daily)
  2. You can add pizza boxes and eggshells to the things you toss into the green waste bin. We learned on Tuesday that Los Angeles Sanitation and Environment gave the green light to customers. Now, residents can “use their green bins to not only get rid of mowed grass and tree trimmings, but food scraps and food-soiled paper.” By the way, if you haven’t already done so, make an appointment to “pick up a two-gallon kitchen pail” for food scraps. (Spectrum News1)
  3. Skid Row now has a water box. “LA County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis met with representatives from nationwide gas distributor SoCalGas and facilities solutions provider Servicon at the Los Angeles Mission on Jan. 11 to unveil the new mobile water filtration system.” If you remember, last year’s heat wave turned the area into a “heat island,” and the homeless who set up their tents there had no ready access to water. (L.A. Downtown News)
  4. On Monday, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) headed to 701 South Shore Road after receiving reports of a sinking vessel. Firefighters “arrived to find a vessel that had taken on several feet (or more) of water and was struggling to stay afloat.” As some firefighters plugged holes they found, others were “aggressively dewatering the vessel.” While it’s unclear if the vessel was compromised during recent storms, the LAFD was confident it could be kept above the surface. (LAFD)
  5. It’s fair to say that Los Angeles is famous for its potholes. However, the recent storms made things worse. The city’s Bureau of Street Services said Monday that, so far, it received “1,542 calls about potholes.” More than half of them have already been filled — but not before a Hayvenhurst Avenue neighbor “spray-painted a warning to drivers.” You may have also seen Caltrans working on Baldwin Avenue and shutting down three lanes in the process. If you hit a pothole, be prepared to spend “probably $500 or $600 depending on the tire, sometimes even $800 per tire.” (NBC)
