Here are the top stories in Los Angeles today:
- Just after 11 a.m. on Friday morning, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) was called to a structure fire at 235 East 29th Street. The caller said it was a “one-story home with heavy attic fire.” Once they got there, things looked worse. The building, which was built in 1910, “suffered a front gable and interior ceiling collapse within 10 minutes” of firefighters arriving. At final count, it took 65 firefighters “1 hour, 55 minutes in largely defensive operations to access, confine and extinguish heavy fire found in the attic.” The American Red Cross is now assisting the residents, four adults and a child, who were displaced. “The fire's cause has been determined to be electrical in nature.” (LAFD)
- On Friday, American Airlines diverted Flight 692, en route from the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport to Honolulu, to the Los Angeles International Airport. Reportedly, the flight “had to be diverted to Los Angeles due to a disturbance in the cabin involving an unruly passenger.” (Fox)
- Cineworld, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year, announced in a court filing this week that it will close 39 theaters. In California, we’ll be losing seven theaters. In L.A., we’re looking at losing the one in the Sherman Oaks Galleria. “A judge will now need to approve the list, which is routine for bankruptcy proceedings.” (AXIOS)
- In 1871, “a mob of rioters killed 18 Chinese Angelenos.” In April 2021, the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs and the El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument announced a search for local architects to design a memorial to honor the victims. On Friday, we learned six finalists were selected from 176 entries. You can see their proposed designs online. The decision will be made next month. (The Architect’s Newspaper)
- The Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) revealed on Friday some of the projects it’s been working on. These are “increasing multi-modal activity and connectivity in San Vicente” on Cochran Avenue and San Vicente Boulevard. See the “newly installed protected bike lane with high-visibility bollards from La Brea Ave to Olympic Blvd.” (LADOT)
