📰 Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:
- More rain fell than the ground could absorb along a stretch of the 5 Freeway, resulting in a 250-foot mudslide. On the northbound side, “the two right lanes are closed from 3 miles south of Templin Highway to Templin Highway.” (NBC)
- Another problem that arises after heavy rains is trees falling. That’s what the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) encountered at 3084 North Belden Drive on Sunday evening. They found “a large tree down, with a ruptured gas line and wires down (power lines).” To secure the area, they turned off the gas and water to the structure, “which only sustained minor damage.” (LAFD)
- A crash in the 10100 block of Woodman Avenue resulted in two fatalities late Sunday evening. “A preliminary investigation found a driver was heading north on Woodman Avenue when the vehicle went into (the) southbound lanes and crashed into a parked car.” Two passengers in their 20s “were pronounced dead at the scene” and the driver was “arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.” (KTLA)
- The 38th Kingdom Day Parade kicked off Monday morning at 10 a.m. on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, traveled to Crenshaw Boulevard, and then headed to Vernon Avenue. It ended “near the K Line's Leimert Park Station.” This year’s theme was “America, the Best Hope of the World.” George C. Fatheree III served as grand marshal. Elected officials were on hand, too. (Fox)
- All Power Books, the volunteer-run store at 4874 West Adams Boulevard that sells books but also offers “free essentials, such as clothing and food from the community fridge,” is moving next door. The move is due, in part, to ongoing negotiations with the landlord. (KCRW)
