- There was a magnitude 3.3 earthquake on Tuesday morning at 9:26 a.m. “The most intense jolts were felt around the South Gate, Gardena, Whittier, and Los Angeles areas.” Dr. Lucy Jones went on record stating that it was in Cudahy and about 14 km (ca. 8.7 miles) deep. (Patch, @DrLucyJones)
- Have you been noticing a helicopter flying low over the area? The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) explained on Monday that this helicopter is a part of its unit. It’s flying “low and slow in a grid pattern over parts of the area as part of the preparations for Super Bowl” festivities. (@NNSANews)
- A video titled "UCLA Philosophy Mass Shooting" led to a closure of the school’s campus and a return to Zoom classes on Tuesday. It was posted by “a former postdoctoral fellow” who was a former lecturer. The suspect, who was arrested in Boulder, Colorado, “was put on leave last spring over allegations that he sent pornographic material to a student.” The school has made counselors available to students and faculty. (Patch)
- A Tuesday report established that Los Angeles saw a 71% increase in hate crimes. Records from the Center for Hate and Extremism at Cal State San Bernardino explain that 615 hate crimes were reported to the LAPD in 2021. While Black individuals make up 8% of Angelenos, they experienced 148 alleged hate crimes. This figure “jumped 91% over 2020.” (KTLA)
- We learned Monday that the Los Angeles Port and the Shanghai Port will collaborate on the establishment of the “first green shipping corridor in the world.” However, it may take a while before action is taken. An implementation plan is due by the end of the year, and tangible steps, such as “the world’s first zero-carbon trans-Pacific container ships” aren’t expected to be introduced until 2030.
