- Potholes are par for the course in L.A. driving. However, the potholes on Aviation Boulevard near the airport are wreaking havoc. A Tuesday report noted that they are causing expensive damage, such as busting two tires on one vehicle. It’s still early days in the New Year, but already “there have been more than 1,600 reports of potholes on L.A. streets.” For the City, this means reports of 40 new potholes a day. (ABC)
- On Wednesday, the Los Angeles City Council may consider renaming a Boyle Heights street to honor Vicente Fernández. The famous singer and actor died on December 12. Council Member Kevin de León is targeting “Bailey Street, located between 1st Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.” This location is placed near the historic Mariachi Plaza. (KTLA)
- The AIDS Healthcare Foundation bought the historic Downtown Barclay Hotel at 103 West 4th Street in October. On Wednesday, we learned that the non-profit will renovate the venue and convert it into “single-room-occupancy, affordable housing for formerly unhoused and low-income individuals.” The group anticipates completing the process by April and renting out the units for about $700. (DT News)
- Adidas is leasing “107,000 square feet at the California Market Center.” We learned Tuesday that the location at 110 East 9th Street will be part of the sportswear company’s expansion and relocation plan. Insiders consider this deal to be a sign that downtown is drawing “major office tenants despite the coronavirus pandemic.” (The Real Deal)
- Mayor Eric Garcetti is a step closer to becoming the Ambassador to India. On Wednesday, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted in favor of the confirmation. The next hurdle the Mayor needs to pass is confirmation by the U.S. Senate majority. Assuming that all goes as planned, Council President Nury Martinez will become acting mayor. (Patch)
