📰 Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:
1) The Los Angeles Police Department will rename its Northeast Area Community Police Station in honor of former Deputy Chief Margaret “Peggy” York. At a Friday news conference, officials remembered York, who began as a Radio Telephone Operator in 1965 and retired as Deputy Chief of the Department in 2002. You can see a plaque that was unveiled in her honor at the 3353 San Fernando Road station. (LAPD)
2) On Thursday, the Los Angeles Police Department responded to several Hansen Dam spot fires. Fifty-eight firefighters prevented the fires, “which were scattered in remote terrain,” from spreading. At this time, the cause of the fires is being investigated. (LAFD)
3) A shoutout to Police Officer Ruiz, who has joined the Los Angeles School Police Department. We learned on Friday that he is a Roosevelt HS graduate and worked as a substitute teacher within the school district. Officer Ruiz then transitioned to law enforcement, and he is now serving the school district he has been a part of for so long. (LA School Police)
4) Mountain lion chase update: On Thursday afternoon, a mountain lion was seen in Brentwood. It spent time heading to the golf course, walking through backyards and crossing streets. The big cat was caught in someone’s backyard, “where it passed out after being shot twice with tranquilizer darts.” It was not P-22; in fact, this particular animal was neither collared nor tagged. It was released in the Angeles National Forest. (KTLA)
5) El Pollo Loco at 5319 Sunset Boulevard is getting into the Día de Los Muertos spirit. The restaurant plans to recreate Mictlan on November 1 and 2. Festivities will run from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and include “an ofrenda, papel picado, colorful lights, and live mariachi music,” in addition to a mural by Sam Flores. (Daily Bulletin)
