1 Person In Custody After Griffith Observatory Brush Fire

LOS ANGELES, CA — Authorities contained a brush fire in Los Feliz near the Griffith Observatory after it burned for over an hour Tuesday afternoon, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The fire was reported around 2:43 p.m. at 2675 N. Nottingham Ave., according to the LAFD. Fire officials reported the fire was contained to 6 acres at 3:55 p.m. All "active flame" had been eliminated, and forward progress was stopped, the department said.

One person was detained in connection with the fire, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. There was no other information immediately available on the person detained.

There were no reported injuries, and the cause of the fire is under investigation. LAFD kept fire crews in the area.

The fire was originally around 100-by-50-foot spot but grew close to 4 acres in around 40 minutes, according to LAFD.

Griffith Observatory was evacuated, and authorities blocked hikers from nearby trails. No homes were evacuated, according to the LAFD. The fire was deemed a "major emergency" by LAFD.

LAFD responded with three helicopters and on the ground.

The fire started just south of the Griffith Observatory near the Boy Scout Trail, according to LAFD.

Southern California has seen hazardous fire weather in recent days, including a brush fire in Chatsworth on Sunday and a major fire in Laguna Niguel that was fully contained on Tuesday.
