Cache Of Illegal Fireworks Seized At Scene Of Explosion That Killed Teen: LAPD

A 17-year-old boy was killed Wednesday in a fireworks explosion.

LOS ANGELES, CA — A 17-year-old boy was killed Wednesday in a fireworks explosion in South Los Angeles Wednesday night.

Officers responded to the 400 block of West 84th Street in Vermont Knolls just before 9:30 p.m. following a radio call regarding someone who had caught on fire, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

"The initial investigation revealed that an unidentified person was manipulating pyrotechnic materials when they exploded, causing serious injuries," police said in a statement.

The victim was determined to be a 17-year-old boy; paramedics responded and transported him to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead, police said.

"The Bomb Squad took action to render the scene safe, which included seizing a large quantity of illegal pyrotechnic devices and transporting all remaining explosive materials to a safe storage location," police said.

The Major Crimes Division is investigating this incident and the source of the illegal pyrotechnic materials that were seized from the residence, police said.
