🤔 Homelessness Poll!
CNN reports that Los Angeles County has a homeless population of “more than 66,400 people.” The numbers are increasing. Do you think that city governments are doing enough? Are there better solutions? Please let me know your thoughts! So far, 34.5% favor more infrastructure investment, 23% want federal involvement, 2.3% say faith-based groups need to step up, 5.7% want the military to open its bases, and 31% ask for justice system involvement.
📰 Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:
1) Located across the street from the 1111 Sunset project, the property that hosts Club Bahia at 1130 Sunset Boulevard was sold for $8.5 million. However, we learned on Friday that the club “was not part of the real estate deal.” Does this mean it will continue to be the Echo Park destination for Latin music? The club’s staying mum, and the buyer’s agent didn’t have any comments, either. (The Eastsider LA)
2) On Saturday, the Media Action Network for Asian Americans (MANAA) took makers of “Bullet Train” to task for using “Asian source material” but only including “Asian characters in minimal roles or as window dressing.” The setting is supposed to be Japan yet “white and Black actors get top billing.” Meanwhile, the novel’s writer tried to keep the peace by saying the characters aren’t real, “and maybe they’re not even Japanese.” (Rafu)
3) Six of 15 fraternities are pushing back against USC’s “strict rules enacted after multiple accusations of sexual assault at frat parties last year.” “Kappa Alpha Order, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Mu, Sigma Chi, Tau Kappa Epsilon, and Zeta Beta Tau . . . severed their relationship with USC” we learned on Friday. The rules bothering them include “posting security guards at stairs or hallways leading to bedrooms during parties, and required sexual violence prevention training for all fraternity members.” (Patch)
4) The LAUSD has worked hard to fill vacancies in its classrooms. Overseeing about 1,000 schools, there are now “just over 200 classroom teaching positions” still open. However, we learned on Friday that the teachers’ union is questioning the district’s sudden ability to “to fill 700 vacancies in less than two weeks.” That said, the district has been hosting “daily hiring fairs across schools, held webinars and information sessions, and conducted in-person recruitment throughout the community.” (ED Source)
5) Mark your calendars! There will be a screening of “Legally Blonde” on August 26. However, this one includes your dog! The Rooftop Cinema Club Arts District will welcome leashed dogs with their human caregivers. And, yes, there will be “an area reserved for puply business.” Get there by 5:30 p.m.(NBC)
