📰 Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:
- Three people died in a shooting at a short-term rental in the 2700 block of Ellison Drive on Saturday morning. Another four were injured. Reportedly, the three deceased individuals were inside a parked car. At this time, police have not yet released information about what was going on at the Beverly Crest home or how the people there are connected. (Patch)
- Another pedestrian was struck and killed by a Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation truck. This accident occurred Wednesday in the 15000 block of Burbank Boulevard. The pedestrian is thought to have been homeless. You may remember that a Bureau of Sanitation truck was involved in another fatal collision with a pedestrian early in December near South Pacific Avenue and West 13th Street. (Yahoo!News, ABC)
- How would you feel about having a Costco be part of a mixed-use space? If a national real estate firm gets its wish, that will be the setup at 5035 Coliseum. Eight-hundred apartments would be built over the Costco. Neighborhood reaction has been mixed. Some residents welcome a Costco in the area. However, we learned on Saturday that others are opposed because of the parking problems that 800 units plus a busy Costco will present. (ABC)
- Update on the Westlake District fire: Earlier, we talked about the fire in the 2800 block of West 7th Street, with the subsequent arrest of a male adult. On Saturday, we learned that the man is a 45-year-old who was initially to be investigated for battery after allegedly breaking into his sister’s apartment. A standoff ensued, and the “man threw burning clothing and trash at police from a balcony.” (Patch, The Press Democrat)
- What’s happening with the Vidiots Theater at 4884 Eagle Rock Boulevard? The initial plan was to move an alternative video store into the old Eagle Theatre and reopen the theater as well. The projected opening date was 2020. Now, it’s 2023, and the venue is still not open. Moreover, we learned on Wednesday that the beer and wine permit approved by the city has a problem. The next hearing is on February 8; it’s anybody’s guess if a 2023 opening will happen. (The Eastsider LA)
