Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:
- An 84-year-old driver crashed a vehicle into Covell, a restaurant at 4628 Hollywood Boulevard, on Wednesday just after noon. Two 27-year-old guests were injured and taken to the hospital. All building occupants were asked to leave so the “damaged structure can be formally assessed for structural integrity by an L.A. Department of Building & Safety Inspector.” (ABC)
- LawnStarter is famous for ranking US cities in a variety of categories. The latest ranking involved the dirtiest cities in America. We learned Wednesday that L.A. is number three of 90. The key categories the rankers considered were “pollution, living conditions, infrastructure and consumer satisfaction.” (Fox)
- A 17-year-old high school student was stabbed on Wednesday at the Miguel Contreras Learning Complex at 322 Lucas Avenue. The school went on lockdown. The student was taken to a hospital and “is currently in stable condition.” (Fox 11)
- On Friday, we discussed that the Los Angeles City Council is considering a measure banning new oil and gas wells while phasing out the already existing ones in about five years. On Wednesday, we learned that the City Council has approved a measure “to ban new oil and gas wells.” This action shuts “down oil and gas fields in the city.” (Patch, KEYT)
- The Red Cross is short on blood because the pandemic reduced donations by 10%. Because the organization handles as many as 40% of blood donation appointments, getting donors out again is a big deal. There’s even a chance at rewards. If you donate in January, you could win two Super Bowl LVI tickets. If you donate in February, you get a $10 Amazon.com gift card. The donation center at 6338 Variel Avenue in the Woodland Hills neighborhood is a popular location for blood drives. (Patch)
