BHPD Officer Fatally Shoots Man Fighting With Another On Valley Street: Police

An off-duty police officer fatally shot an armed man who was fighting with another, armed with a pipe, on a Valley street, police said.

LOS ANGELES, CA — An off-duty Beverly Hills police officer fatally shot an armed man who was fighting with another man on a San Fernando Valley street Thursday night, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The incident was reported at around 8:15 p.m. on Roscoe Boulevard near the 405 Freeway in North Hills, KTLA reported.

The LAPD's preliminary investigation revealed that the off-duty officer and another person were driving eastbound on Roscoe Boulevard when they encountered two people fighting: One person had a pipe and the other had a handgun, the LAPD said.

The officer stopped and exited his vehicle in an attempt to break up the fight. The man with the gun was struck by the officer's gunfire and died at the scene, KTLA reported.

The man with the pipe left the scene after the shooting. He was found nearby and was in custody as of Thursday night, KTLA reported.

The officer remained on the scene and cooperated with the LAPD's investigations, police said.

“We prefer our officers, if they’re off duty, if they can to be good witnesses but sometimes that’s not an option … If somebody’s life is in jeopardy you do have a duty to stop,” LAPD Capt. Brian Wendling said.

None of the people involved have been publicly named by authorities.
