- Did you feel it? There was a 2.6 earthquake centered in El Segundo Friday morning at 5 a.m. This places it just 20 miles outside DTLA. “The quake followed a magnitude-3.6 earthquake at about 3 a.m. in northern San Diego County.” (NBC)
- Beginning January 1, Los Angeles “ends the sale of flavored e-cigarettes, menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars.” The City Council unanimously voted for the ban on Wednesday. It’s important to note that possession of these products by residents over the age of 21 is not banned. Similarly, existing hookah lounges got an exemption. (ABC)
- The trial of rapper Nipsey Hussle’s alleged murderer began on Thursday with jury selection. The suspect was “charged with first degree murder, two counts of attempted murder and several other charges” having to do with the March 2019 shooting. (ABC)
- Update: On May 29, there was a report of a hiker dying at Will Rogers State Park. On Friday, the hiker was identified as a prominent Beverly Hills obstetrician/gynecologist. He “died after reportedly suffering a heart attack.” Several of his celebrity clients expressed their condolences. (Fox)
- Pickpocketing and pickpursing are on the rise in L.A. We learned Friday that “incidents have been surging in bars and nightclubs, in particular.” In 2021, between January 1 and May 15, there were 23 reports. In 2022, there were 364 reports for the same period. The majority of victims are women. Moreover, the majority of reports come from Hollywood. DTLA was in second place and Koreatown was in third.
