The opossums were released back into the wild but the would-be thieves weren't so lucky, according to police.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, CA — A deputy patrolling an evacuation area in San Antonio Heights encountered two people who had fentanyl and wild opossums in a vehicle, according to authorities.

The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday on Mountain Avenue north of Euclid Avenue, which was under an evacuation warning due to the Bridge Fire, police said. The deputy found an illegally parked vehicle and made contact with 32-year-old Vincent Olivas and 23-year-old Melissa Segura, both of Ontario, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

The pair had suspected fentanyl, drug paraphernalia and items indicating they may have been in the area to commit theft, police said. There were also multiple opossums in their vehicle, according to police, who said the duo had taken the animals from the wilderness.
