Flash Flood Warning Issued For LA, Long Beach, Glendale

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning Sunday covering southern Los Angeles County and southeastern Ventura County.

LOS ANGELES — The National Weather Service's Los Angeles office issued a flash flood warning Sunday that will last into the evening as the Southland braced for the arrival of Tropical Storm Hilary and several inches of rain possible before the end of the night.

Warning of potentially life-threatening situations developing, forecasters urged residents to exercise extreme caution and avoid driving across flooded roads. There will also be a threat of thunderstorms and landslides as the weather intensifies.

"Life-threatening flash flooding of creeks, streams, and normally dry arroyos are expected," NWS Los Angeles wrote Sunday. "Significant urban roadway flooding will occur, especially in low-lying areas. Dangerous flows will likely occur across low-water crossings. Significant rock and mudslide activity is expected in the mountains and canyons, with debris flows possible in recent burn scars."

The warning was scheduled to expire at 7:45 p.m., but a separate flood watch will remain in place until 10 a.m. Monday. A flood advisory covering all of Ventura County will be in place until 8:30 p.m.

  • Manhattan Beach
  • Alhambra
  • Hermosa Beach

"Doppler radar and rain gauge reports indicated heavy rain across the warned area," the warning reads in part. "Rainfall rates of 0.5 to 1 inch per hour will be common. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are possible in the warned area. Heavier rainfall with embedded thunderstorms [is] expected this afternoon and evening, with local rates up to 1.5 inches per hour possible."
