Kanye West's Malibu Home, Gutted Architectural Masterpiece, Sells Despite Decayed State
Kanye West stripped bare his architectural masterpiece of a home, leaving it exposed to the elements and West embroiled in legal troubles.

MALIBU, CA — Stripped of its windows and interior fixtures and left to decay in the oceanfront air, Kanye West's gutted Malibu home — designed by an architectural master — has finally sold after sitting on the market for over half a year, according to reports.
The modern concrete marvel of a home sits on Malibu Road, nestled behind Pacific Coast Highway on Puerco Beach. After buying it for $57 million in 2021, West embarked on an ill-fated renovation project that's never been finished.

In its dilapidated state, West listed it for $53 million, which "Selling Sunset" star Jason Oppenheim — whose brokerage handled the listing — said reflected the future buyer's cost to return the home to its former glory. After a price cut, the home is in escrow for $39 million, People reported Thursday.

The New Yorker published photos and videos of the home's recent appearance, which is a far cry from the vision executed by its designer, Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect Tadao Ando.
The house's concrete interior is stripped bare. Its windows were removed, leaving the inside exposed to the elements. And exterior metal railings showed plenty of rust.

The photos accompanied a deep-dive article into the saga of West's ownership of the home. Architect Ron Radziner recalled to the New Yorker the first time he saw photos of the changes made to the home, known as the Sachs House.
“We were all devastated,” he said. “It was this beautiful piece of architecture, and it’s really destroyed.”
The home has been the center of several legal entanglements for West.
A former West employee, hired to manage the remodel, sued the rapper in September, claiming West subjected him to dangerous working conditions and owed him unpaid wages, People reported.
The employee, Tony Saxon, said he was responsible for cleaning, hiring and managing contractors and security during 16-hour workdays.
Saxon claimed he was fired in November 2021 after he refused to remove all of the windows and electricity from the home.
Additionally, one remodel contractor filed a lien against the property in January due to unpaid bills for the work he completed, People reported.
The 4,000-square-foot home features four bedrooms and five baths. Made of 1,200 tons of concrete and 200 tons of steel reinforcement, it also features 1,500 square feet of outdoor living space and ocean views from every room, according to the listing.
The home's original architect, Ando, has designed fewer than 20 homes in the U.S. Among them is Jay-Z and Beyonce's Malibu home, which they bought last year for $200 million. At the time, that sale was the state's most expensive ever.
The $53 million sale marked the largest real estate transaction in Los Angeles County between July 22 and July 28, the Real Deal reported.
