'King Of The Hill' Star Shot Dead In Homophobic Attack, Partner Says

The shooting happened after a fire destroyed the couple's home and killed their dogs earlier this year.

Jonathan Joss, who voiced John Redcorn in the "King of the Hill," was shot and killed over the weekend in what his partner characterized as a homophobic attack.

Joss' death comes as the classic adult animated series readies for a revival 16 years after it last aired; the actor had already recorded lines for the 14th season, set to premiere Aug. 4, Variety reported.

Joss, 59, was shot and killed by a neighbor at his home in Texas on Sunday night, according to police. The neighbor, Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, 56, was arrested and charged with murder shortly after, the San Antonio Police Department said.

“The officers attempted life-saving measures until EMS arrived. EMS pronounced the victim deceased,” police said in a statement.

In a post on Joss' Facebook account, his partner, Tristan Kern de Gonzales described the attack as the culmination of years of harassment they've suffered.

He said the shooting occurred outside the couple's former home, which had burned down in January in a fire that killed their three dogs.

"That home was burned down after over two years of threats from people in the area who repeatedly told us they would set it on fire," he wrote. "We reported these threats to law enforcement multiple times and nothing was done. Throughout that time we were harassed regularly by individuals who made it clear they did not accept our relationship. Much of the harassment was openly homophobic."

When the couple arrived at the property on Sunday to check their mail, they found "the skull of one of our dogs and its harness placed in clear view," Gonzales wrote.

"This caused both of us severe emotional distress. We began yelling and crying in response to the pain of what we saw," Gonzales continued. "While we were doing this a man approached us. He started yelling violent homophobic slurs at us. He then raised a gun from his lap and fired."

Gonzales wrote that his husband pushed him out of the way of the gunshot, saving his life.

Police said their investigation was ongoing and did not immediately provide any information on what prompted the shooting.

At the time of the fire, Joss was readying to move back to Los Angeles to get back into acting, he said in an interview with the San Antonio Express-News.

He voiced Redcorn from seasons 2-13 of “King of the Hill," taking over from original actor Victor Aaron after he died in 1996 in a car accident.

Joss recorded lines for the upcoming revival and is set to be heard in Episode 2, Variety reported.

Joss, who was of Apache and Comanche descent, also played Chief Ken Hotate in “Parks and Recreation" and appeared in “Ray Donovan,” “Tulsa King” and “The Magnificent Seven," the Times reported.
