LA Public Libraries Close Over Coronavirus Fears

LOS ANGELES, CA — The 73 public libraries in Los Angeles will be closed through March 31 in response to the coronavirus, following a directive from Mayor Eric Garcetti barring gatherings in city facilities of 50 people or more, officials announced.

During the closure, due dates for borrowed books and other materials will be automatically extended, no late fees will be assessed and items can be returned when libraries reopen, city librarian John Szabo said Friday.

Digital services, including e-books and audiobooks, streaming TV, movie and music services, classes and digital subscriptions to newspapers and magazines, remain available at lapl.org

"Your health and safety is of utmost importance, and we will evaluate and adjust as new information becomes available," Szabo said. "We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and we thank you for your continued understanding and support."
