Large Quake Rattles Southern California
The quake's epicenter was northwest of Los Angeles, near Ojai in Ventura County.
OJAI, CA — A magnitude 5.1 earthquake with an epicenter southeast of Ojai struck Sunday at 2:41 p.m., followed by several aftershocks, according to the United States Geological Survey. Residents reported shaking felt across Los Angeles and Orange counties.
Nearly a dozen aftershocks followed the initial quake, with the largest measuring a magnitude of 3.9.
The quake struck as residents across the Southland braced for the arrival of Tropical Storm Hilary, spurring flash flood warnings and advisories around the greater Los Angeles area.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage attributed to the quake.
Earthquake expert Lucy Jones wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that the shaker appeared to have been preceded by a series of foreshocks that began Saturday morning.

She warned people to expect more aftershocks. There is a 5 percent chance an aftershock will be larger than the initial 5.1-magnitude quake, added Jones.
"There is no correlation between the earthquake and the tropical storm," she wrote. "Just a coincidence that is a good reminder that disaster resilience is a multi-hazard endeavor."
The National Weather Service said there was not expected to be any threat of a tsunami due to the quake.
Since the quake cleared the magnitude 5 threshold, the USGS sent a Wireless Emergency Alert to cell phones.
