SAN PEDRO, CA — An elevator mechanic was stranded 60 feet above the ground in a dockside crane at the Port of Los Angeles Tuesday night, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The man was trapped inside a compact elevator while working on the system for about an hour until LAFD crews climbed the crane to rescue him. He was safely returned to ground at about 9 p.m., officials said.

"LAFD responders, including those specially trained, certified and equipped to perform specialized urban search and rescue, climbed the exterior of the rain-drenched crane to a location between levels (i.e. elevator landings), where they stabilized the elevator and forced open the elevator doors," said LAFD spokesperson Brian Humphrey.

The worker was assessed for any injuries or medical distress in the elevator before he was placed into a rope and harness system and lowered outside the elevator shaft to the next landing. From there, firefighters assisted the mechanic down an auxiliary stairwell to the ground.

No injuries were reported and the man declined any further medical care or transportation, LAFD said.
