  1. The former Star-Kist tuna cannery on Terminal Island, which is now considered a historic plant, may not get demolished after all. We learned Friday that the Port of L.A. “put a planned demolition of the vacant building on hold.” Neighborhood groups had been objecting to the destruction of the cannery that was founded back in 1914. (The Real Deal)
  2. FOX 11 Reporter Stu Mundel doesn’t just report the news, he also wants to help the LAPD catch the suspects. A Friday police chase found Mundel traveling overhead in the news helicopter, when he saw the suspect run “toward a crowded alley near 43rd Street and Avalon Boulevard” only to hide behind a parked car. "Oh, come on, guys! He's right there," he yelled as the officers go past the suspect. Spoiler alert: They caught the suspect. (Patch)
  3. Los Angeles City Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez wants to help students who are going to be getting student loan bills again starting in May. She filed two motions on Friday “to have the Los Angeles Youth Development Department offer courses and training on college aid and financial management,” which helps younger adults make good fiscal planning decisions. The second motion asks “to provide people who complete the courses with an educational support stipend to help students who have education-related debt.” (My News LA)
  4. Best-selling author Sam Quinones wrote an “exposé on black tar heroin and oxycodone.” Back in 2015, the book “Dreamland” was a groundbreaking revelation. On Friday, we learned that he has written “The Least of Us,” which is an exposé on “a cheaper and far more potent strain of speed from Mexico” that he connected to the city’s homelessness crisis. (LA Mag)
  5. A highly-skilled L.A. poker player has been “charged in connection with an illegal video gambling operation and money laundering.” The 35-year-old World Series of Poker bracelet winner was arrested Wednesday. He remains “detained pending trial.” (Patch)
