School Canceled Across LAUSD As Tropical Storm Hilary Batters LA

Los Angeles Unified will close all schools, campuses, and after-school programs Monday amid the unprecedented tropical storm.

LOS ANGELES — All Los Angeles Unified Schools will close Monday with Tropical Storm Hilary forecast to batter the Southland deep into the night Sunday.

During a news conference Sunday afternoon, LAUSD superintendent Alberto Carvalho said the timing and unprecedented nature of the storm made keeping schools open virtually impossible.

"The peak of this storm will take place in the middle of the night, depriving us of our ability to inspect schools or determine access to schools to be safe," Carvalho said. "There is no way we can compromise the safety of a single child, or an employee."

Carvalho noted that some bus drivers arrive to work as early as 4 a.m., with some students walking to school as early as 6 a.m., which would not allow enough time for officials to inspect schools and verify safe routes.

The district plans to resume regular operations on Tuesday.
