- Boyle Height’s Sears Building closed in 2021. However, the owner of the 1920s structure wants to turn it into “a life rebuilding center for the homeless.” We learned Saturday that “the goal is to house 5,500 people, bring in nonprofits, and include services like a medical clinic, mental health support, and job training.” This process is said to have worked on a smaller scale in the OC. (ABC)
- The Armenian American community is getting a museum and cultural center. We saw footage from the construction site on Colorado Boulevard in Glendale on Sunday. The organizers expect the venue to open in 2024 and “be a platform for Armenian artists, thought leaders, writers,” and educators who teach the next generation bout the Armenian Genocide. (ABC 7)
- Arson figures are a mixed bag. The LAFD reported “18,161 fire responses in the city in 2021” of which 5% were determined to be arson. This figure is a 51% increase when compared to 2019. Downtown L.A. is the most prone to fires. The Skid Row tent encampments factor into the risk factor. “There were at least 62 tent fires in Skid Row in December alone.” Insiders also determine that some fires are from folks who lost their jobs, cannot afford their mortgages, and hope for the insurance money. (Patch)
- Weather forecasters claim that we’re in for cold storm weather event this week. “The region will see mostly cloudy skies and cool temperatures, with a 20% chance of rain.” “A large mass of cold air from the north is expected to bring showers, isolated thunderstorms and possibly some hail.” (KTLA)
- If you’re looking for something fun to do with the young’uns, consider visiting Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre. On March 3 and 4, you can see Moana; on the 5th and 6th, there will be Pajama Party screenings of Mulan. (Aliso Laguna News)
