Early Flu Season Turns Deadly In Los Angeles County

The first flu death of the season was reported Wednesday in Los Angeles County.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Health officials on Wednesday confirmed the first flu-related death of the season in Los Angeles County.

The patient was an "older person" with underlying health conditions who lived in the county. The person did not appear to have received a flu vaccine this season, according to the Los Angeles Department of Public Health.

Flu activity in the region is currently "low," according to health officials, who expect infections other than increase as the holidays approach and people begin gathering to celebrate.

"We send our condolences to the family and loved ones of the person we lost. This tragic death reminds us how serious influenza can be,” said Dr. Muntu Davis, LA county public health officer. “The best protection this season is getting an updated flu vaccine."

County health officials and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend everyone 6 months or older get an annual flu vaccine.

The LA County Department of Public Health also recommends those older than 6 months receive an updated COVID-19 vaccine.

Local health officials also recommend older adults, pregnant people and infants receive the RSV vaccine.

  • The county public health department recommends the following to reduce the risk of respiratory illnesses:
  • wash your hands frequently
  • stay home and away from others when you feel sick
  • wear a well-fitting mask in crowded indoor spaces, around people at higher risk, or whenever you have symptoms.

Statewide, there have been 35 flu-related deaths so far this season, according to the California Department of Public Health.
