- An individual dressed up as Spider-Man and an accomplice in a Wolverine costume climbed the skyscraper at 408 South Spring Street on Thursday. Once they were in place, they unfurled a homemade banner that urged Marvel to reach out to the climbers. It’s unclear if Marvel will do that. (KTLA)
- It was announced Friday that the popular food give-away by Los Angeles Health Save and Downtown Crenshaw “is temporarily on pause.” The organizations teamed up to serve the Leimert Park neighborhood with “up to 100 bags of fresh organic and locally grown produce that included items such as sweet potatoes, cabbage, collards, kale, onions, garlic, organic apples, pears, oranges, green beans, mushrooms, bananas and more.” Although a drive-through event, volunteers also gave bags to walk-ups. “LA Health Save will be starting a plant-based food bank in the spring of 2022.” (LA Sentinel)
- We learned Friday that the Los Angeles City Council may vote on “a measure that would ban new oil and gas wells.” Existing wells would be phased out over a period of five years. At this time, there are approximately 1,000 wells in the City. Critics representing the industry consider this an “unlawful and uncompensated taking of private property.” “Air pollution from oil fields in Los Angeles disproportionately affects areas that are predominantly Latino or Black,” proponents argue. (KTLA)
- Jefferson Park had three hit-and-runs in the last couple of weeks. The LAPD hosted a news conference Thursday that talked about the accidents and encouraged the public to reach out with information. “Detectives have security camera video in all three crimes.” One took place January 5 at 4th Avenue near 30th Street on the sidewalk; the next one happened two days later on Western Avenue at 29th Street. On January 11, a hit-and-run resulted in a fatality. (NBC)
- Mayor Eric Garcetti announced Friday that "from now through March 31," the Winter Shelter Program is active. It provides “unhoused Angelenos with a warm place to sleep, free meals, housing assistance, and other supportive services in temporary emergency shelters.” Contact the venue at 1-800-548-6047 for more information.
