Standoff Shuts Down Ramps On 2 Major Freeways In LA County

A man believed to be armed prompted a police standoff early Tuesday, closing freeway ramps and forcing the zoo to shut down for the day.

LOS ANGELES, CA — A standoff between police and a potentially armed man sitting in an SUV in Griffith Park closed a pair of freeway ramps and prompted the Los Angeles Zoo to shut down for the day.

Police responded to an area in or near the parking lot of the Autry Museum of the American West, across from the zoo, just after 4:30 a.m., according to CBS Los Angeles, which captured aerial footage of the incident.

The man was in an SUV in the museum's parking lot, which was closed, according to a report from the scene.

The exits from the southbound and northbound 5 and westbound 134 freeways to Zoo Drive were closed by the California Highway Patrol at the LAPD's request. They remained closed as of 10:30 a.m., according to a Sigalert.

The zoo announced later in the morning that it would be closed for the day, as much of the area was cordoned off by police.

The man was taken into custody around 11:20 a.m., according to police.
