📰 Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:
1) The LAPD arrested a 23-year-old man who reportedly attacked his mother with a sword Tuesday evening. Calls came in from the 1200 block of South Victoria Avenue. According to a family member, there was a dispute, and “the young man had been troubled for quite some time before this incident occurred.” The victim is expected to survive. (KTLA)
2) We’re number three! Well, when it comes to being one of the “rattiest cities in America.” We learned on Tuesday that Orkin moved us from second place to third, following Chicago and New York. The company based its rankings on the number of “new rodent treatments performed from September 1, 2021, to August 31, 2022” by its technicians. (Fox)
3) The LAFD responded to the discharge of potentially hazardous material on Wednesday before noon at 12746 West Jefferson Boulevard. The product was “being discharged from a commercial store,” which was identified as a CVS Pharmacy. Customers and staff members were evacuated, and one person received medical attention. “Investigators are examining the store's freezer system as a potential source for the leak.” (LAFD, Patch)
4) Los Angeles is one of the cities where homeless individuals "frequent public transportation and often set up camp at the end of the line when service hours come to an end." On Tuesday, the L.A. County Board of Supervisors directed that the county and Metro need to develop a plan to help them find alternative shelter. There’ll be an update on the progress in 90 days. (KTLA)
5) Waymo is coming to Los Angeles! The self-driving, ride-hailing company is already present in Phoenix and San Francisco. Waymo plans to “begin driving autonomously in several central districts over the coming months.” In its Wednesday blog post, it particularly mentioned “Downtown and Miracle Mile, Koreatown, Santa Monica, Westwood, and West Hollywood.” (Waymo)
