The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Los Angeles.

Good morning, Los Angeles; today is National Vitamin C Day! Let's get you started this Monday with everything you need to know going on around Los Angeles today.

Is that crosswalk you are using sanctioned by the City of L.A.? Also, why do Black women make up a third of missing women but only 15% of the population? Finally, if I say hawawshi and feteer, do you say The Original Hawowshi?

  1. That crosswalk at the corner of Romaine Street and Serrano Avenue in East Hollywood? It’s illegal. While the Department of Transportation doesn’t like it, the Crosswalk Collective LA paints them “where they say they're needed to keep people safe while crossing the street.” “The group took action after their requests for safer streets through the city failed.” On Saturday, the DOT said that “unauthorized alterations to the street are illegal and subject to immediate removal. They also take limited city resources away from our efforts to install authorized safety treatments.” (NBC)
  2. On Saturday, the Women’s Leadership Project held its annual #Standing4BlackGirls event at Leimert Park. The event sought to bring “attention to the lives of murdered and missing Black women.” “Organizers say Black women make up less than 15% of the U.S. population, but account for more than a third of all missing women.” (ABC)
  3. Are you hip to the food that makes Egyptians homesick and has countless Angelenos stalking the chef on Instagram? We are talking about the underground Reseda pop-up known as The Original Hawowshi. It serves up Cairo street food such as hawawshi and feteer. Find him sometimes “outside Salam Lounge in Koreatown;” he also “takes pre-orders and offers timed pop-ups from a private residence in Reseda.” (LA Eater)
  4. At noon on Sunday, Archbishop José Gomez led the 20th annual Mass honoring César Chávez. It took place at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. It honored “Chávez’s commitment to the struggle for justice and dignity for all workers.” (Spectrum News 1)
  5. We learned Sunday that the unhealthiest restaurant order in California is the Fudgegazi at Donut Friend in Los Angeles. It is “a raised donut filled with chocolate cream, topped with chocolate glaze and chocolate chips.” The good news is that it’s vegan. (Patch)
