City Council Election Canceled In Los Alamitos For Unchallenged Seat
Incumbent and current Los Alamitos Mayor Shelley Hasselbrink was appointed to another four-year term, officials say.
LOS ALAMITOS, CA — The Los Alamitos City Council opted to cancel the city council election this November due to incumbent and Los Alamitos Mayor Shelley Hasselbrink running unchallenged for her District 4 seat.
Hasselbrink was appointed to another four-year term after a unanimous city council vote on Thursday, Aug. 25, according to city records.
Council members voted on the matter during a special meeting that was held via Zoom, with Hasselbrink recusing herself from the vote.

While discussing the matter, council members had the option of either appointing Hasselbrink to the seat or proceeding with an uncontested election, the latter an action recommended by city staff.
Hasselbrink first joined the Los Alamitos City Council in 2014, where she served as mayor in 2017 and again this year, according to the city's website.
