LETTER: Daily Post Sensationalized Candidate's Blog Topics

David Cortright, candidate for the Santa Clara County Board of Education, asks the newspaper for an apology and a retraction for characterizing his personal weblog as 'an adult blog.'

Editor:

A front page article in today's (Oct. 11) Daily Post cherry picks three isolated posts from my personal blog of nearly one thousand and maliciously concludes it is an “adult blog.” One post commented on a satirical clip from the FOX TV show Family Guy and the other two quoted an article in Psychology Today on the nature of homophobia. The latter is of particular interest to me as my best friend—who I have known since college—is gay.

I've written a wide variety of posts over the years on topics that I found interesting and thought-provoking. These three posts were no different. But I certainly don't want them to detract from the larger issues of my campaign, so I decided to take them down.

It is noteworthy that the author of the article—Jeramy Gordon—was so interested in this one angle that he tracked me down and accosted me about it just before I participated in the League of Women Voters forum in Mountain View last night. Yet he didn't even bother to stay to hear what I had to say on the issues of education in Santa Clara County.

It is also sad that the Daily Post is more interested in a trumped-up sensationalist piece rather than talking about the real issues, such as how exactly the county plans to oversee all 36 charters that they have approved with only two full-time employees, or why my opponent has twice approved exorbitant compensation packages for county superintendents that cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.

A retraction and apology from the Daily Post is in order.

Respectfully,
Dave Cortright
