📰 News we're reading

1. Local merchants see steady holiday sales as season comes to a close (losaltosonline.com) — Downtown Los Altos merchants report mostly steady to strong holiday sales, crediting loyal local shoppers and a focus on personalized service despite broader economic jitters. Store owners and the Los Altos Village Association see encouraging signs like busy restaurants, strong event attendance, and few empty storefronts, even as many residents remain cautious with spending heading into 2026.

2. Fligor wins race for Santa Clara County assessor (paloaltoonline.com) — Los Altos Vice Mayor Neysa Fligor has decisively won the special election for Santa Clara County assessor, earning about two-thirds of the vote in the Dec. 30 runoff. Her victory elevates a familiar Los Altos leader to a powerful countywide role overseeing property assessments, following longtime assessor Larry Stone’s retirement.

3. MVLA school district approves new graduation requirements (losaltosonline.com) — Families in the Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District should know that graduation requirements are changing for the class of 2027 and beyond, with social studies credits reduced and electives increased while total credits stay the same. The shift reflects the board’s earlier decision to trim the ethnic studies requirement from a year-long course to one semester, and teachers are now proposing a new freshman sequence combining ethnic and world studies.

4. Walk, run, listen, look – fun things to do in early January (losaltosonline.com) — Kick off early January with Los Altos First Friday downtown on Jan. 2, featuring live music and activities at venues around town. You’ll also find nearby options from a New Year’s Day hike and a Shoreline resolution run to open mics and a LEGO show in Mountain View and Palo Alto.
