555-Unit Tamien Station Project Breaks Ground In San Jose

The new housing hub will include more than 100 affordable housing units located just a few steps from transit.

SAN JOSE, CA — Construction kicked off this week on a new transit-focused affordable housing project that will add hundreds of units in San Jose's Tamien neighborhood. Named after its neighboring transit hub, Tamien Station will contain 555 units of new housing with easy access to Caltrain and VTA light rail.

According to the county, 135 apartments will be designated for affordable housing. That figure includes units set aside for people making between $54,390 and $108,780 — 30 to 60 percent of Santa Clara County's area median income — and 67 units set aside for "rapid rehousing." The site will also feature a large daycare center to serve its families.

"Tamien Station is one of several unique transit-oriented development partnerships between the county and the Valley Transportation Authority that include using public land for housing," said Consuelo Hernandez, director of the Office of Supportive Housing. "This project shows we are delivering on our commitment to the community to build more affordable and supportive housing."

The Core Companies will oversee development with Republic Urban Properties and the VTA, which provided the land. Funding sources include $25 million from the Measure A Affordable Housing Bond. Officials said the county remains on track in its goal to build 4,800 units of new housing by 2026.
