Containment Grows For Brush Fire Burning East of San Jose

Firefighters said they stopped the forward progress of the Clayton Fire burning Thursday afternoon in the eastern foothills.

SAN JOSE, CA — Members of Cal Fire and the San Jose Fire Department made progress against a brush fire Thursday afternoon in unincorporated Santa Clara County. Fire officials confirmed the Clayton Fire was threatening structures in the Alum Rock area, near Clayton Road and Via de la Vista, shortly before 3 p.m.

Cal Fire shared aerial images of the fire near buildings on social media.

The San Jose Fire Department said 70 of its firefighters were at the scene, working under a unified command with Cal Fire SCU. Cal Fire helicopters dipped into Lake Cunningham to dump water on the flames.

The department reported that crews successfully stopped the fire's forward movement shortly before 5 p.m. Cal Fire said the fire had burned 66 acres and was 20 percent contained as of 5:45 p.m.
