Highway 17 Closed Through Los Gatos Due to Police Action

BREAKING: Police say traffic will be significantly impacted.

Santa Clara County sheriff's deputies are continuing to search in the Santa Cruz Mountains this morning for a man who robbed a bank in Scotts Valley on Thursday and then fled north on state Highway 17, sheriff's
officials said.

Search efforts have been focused around the rural community of Redwood Estates, near the Lexington Reservoir.

The suspect was seen overnight in the area of Aldercroft Heights and Locust Drive, sheriff's officials said around 2 a.m. today.

At some point during the incident Thursday, a Scotts Valley police officer shot at the suspect, but it was unclear if he was hit.

The man was described as Hispanic with a thin build and groomed facial hair. He stands about 5 foot 9 inches tall and was wearing a black jacket, dark jeans and a black mask at the time of the robbery.

The robbery was reported sometime before 10:50 a.m.

Highway 17 was closed in both directions until after 8 p.m. Thursday.

LOS GATOS, CA -- Due to an ongoing law enforcement investigation taking place in the hills of unincorporated Los Gatos, Highway 17 has been closed as of the afternoon of Jan. 26 in both north and southbound directions in the area of Redwood Estates, the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department said.

It's anticipated that traffic on Highway 17 southbound and surrounding areas, including Los Gatos will be significantly impacted, and its currently unknown when traffic on Highway 17 will be opened.

"We are recommending that motorists avoid attempting to travel southbound on Highway 17 past the Lark Avenue/Highway 85 exchange, until this investigation has been resolved," the Los Gatos Monte Sereno Police Department said in a statement provided to Patch Media.

The Department has deployed sign boards throughout the town advising of the closures and expected traffic delays, and says it's continuing to monitor the situation.

Updated information will be provided as soon as it becomes available.
