Friends and family of the late Los Gatos/Monte Sereno police Sgt. Dave Fishback, killed July 3 in a motorcycle crash in Southern California, are inviting the community to a memorial service at 10 a.m. July 27 at the Los Gatos United Methodist Church, 111 Church St.

According to his obituary on the legacy.com website, Sgt. Fishback was born in San Francisco on Oct. 17, 1960. He was raised in Cupertino and graduated from Lynbrook High School in San Jose.

He started his law enforcement career as a deputy with the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office. After five years, he transferred to the Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police Department, where he served 22 years, the obituary said.

While working in Los Gatos, Sgt. Fishback also served on the SWAT team, was a motor officer and a range master, did a special assignment with the county narcotics task force, and was on both the crime scene and major traffic investigations teams.

In 2011, at the age of 50, Sgt. Fishback retired as a sergeant, but continued with the department as a reserve police officer, the obituary continued.

He was an avid motorcycle rider and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and making memories with friends and family.

"Dave had the innate ability to make everyone he knew feel special; he was a great friend and was truly one of a kind," the obituary added.

Sgt. Fishback is preceded in death by his mother, Joann Fishback. He is survived by his father, Ed Fishback, stepmother Bobbie Fishback; daughters Alexandria and Samantha Fishback; and granddaughter Brooklyn Jackson.

He is also survived by his siblings, Brian Fishback and Sharon Ecker-Haleva, and siblings by marriage Susan Gillis, Carrie Gillis Kelly and Scott Gillis.

"Dave loved being a police officer in Los Gatos and was so proud to wear the uniform," Los Gatos/Monte Sereno Police Chief Scott Seaman said in an email on July 8. "He was beloved and respected by everyone."

Sgt. Fishback, 52, retired from the LGMSPD in the fall of 2011.
