SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — Fire agencies across Santa Clara County are joining others around the Bay Area in urging residents to leave fireworks to the professionals this Independence Day to reduce the risk of fires, injuries and costly fines.

In a joint news release Monday, fire officials cited the thousands of emergency room visits related to fireworks injuries reported each year across the nation, along with the increased fire risk ahead from warmer and drier weather.

"The record rainfall has helped the grass and brush grow in dramatic amounts," said Suwanna Kerdkaew, Santa Clara County Fire Chief. "As summer heats up and the vegetation quickly dries, the high fire hazard conditions can create a potentially dangerous or deadly situation with only one spark from firework activity."

Consumer fireworks are illegal across most Bay Area jurisdictions and violations can lead to fines in the thousands and potential jail time. In some jurisdictions, violators can also be liable for emergency response costs.

"Fireworks are illegal in San Jose and most of Santa Clara County because of the danger they present to our communities," said Robert Sapien, Jr., San Jose's fire chief. "The unintended consequences of illegal fireworks can be devastating and it is important to keep yourself and others out of harm's way."

Officials ask that 911 be reserved for fires, injuries and other emergencies, and that residents call the non-emergency dispatch number to report fireworks violations. Some cities also have online reporting options, and several police departments will be conducting emphasis patrols.

Instead of taking a big risk on illegal celebrations, Santa Clara County leaders recommend families make plans to attend one of the eight professional fireworks shows scheduled for July 4:
