2 Pull Papers for Potential Council Runs

Former Council member Missy Zeitsoff and Jack Utter are the newest potential candidates in the 2012 Malibu City Council campaign.

A woman who served on Malibu's first and a man who recently moved back to the city picked up nomination papers at on Tuesday to begin potential campaigns for this year's council election.

Missy Zeitsoff came to City Hall in the early afternoon with her twin children Jordan and Caitlin and granddaughter Brittny. Zeitsoff, 65, was elected to the council in 1990 and served from the next year until 1992. Go to read more about her story.

"I have a lot of unfinished business for the best city in the world, Malibu," Zeitsoff said. "And I want to fulfill my 'Keep Malibu Malibu' [slogan] from 20 years ago ... to keep , to keep the Civic Center residents safe from , to protect the budget which I believe is having problems right now, to take care of our land-use problems … and I'd like to have a slow-growth ordinance which acknowledges all the constraints for every project to be approved."

When asked if she would be running with any other candidates, Zeitsoff said, "I am fully independent. I don't trust anybody as much as I trust myself."

Utter, 76, moved to this city from Orange County nine months ago. He had lived in Malibu more than 25 years earlier. Utter is involved in various industries, including real estate, development, construction, law and business consulting. He said he wants to help Malibu maintain its rural character.

"I am opposed to excessive development and to development that is in my opinion changing the personality of the community to the extent that it becomes a rinky dink kind of community on PCH instead of a community all people can enjoy with their families and not have a bar on every corner," Utter said.

He stressed that he does not want too many bars and restaurants in Malibu.

Six others have pulled papers for potential council runs—incumbents John Sibert and Jefferson "Zuma Jay" Wagner as well as Andy Lyon, Joan House, Skylar Peak and "Malibu" Hamish "The Illusion" Patterson.

All the potential candidates have said they intend to run, although Lyon as of Tuesday evening was the only official candidate. Last week, he  to City Hall with at least 20 signatures from registered Malibu voters. Sibert and Wagner must return their papers by Friday. The other candidates have a deadline of Jan. 17.

The top three vote-getters will win seats on the council. Election Day is April 10. The last day to register to vote is March 26.
