Earthquake Strikes Malibu Coast; Did You Feel It?

The quake was felt widely in parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

MALIBU, CA — A magnitude-3.3 earthquake struck off the coast of Malibu on Thursday morning and was felt widely in parts of the San Fernando Valley and Ventura County.

The quake struck at 7:19 a.m. 12 miles from Westlake Village and Malibu at the depth of 9.3 miles, according to the US Geological Survey. Shaking was reported in Newbury Park in Ventura County, Camarillo, Thousand Oaks and Agoura Hills. No damage or injuries were reported.

Earlier this month, a 3.0 temblor struck Santa Monica and the quake was widely felt throughout the Southland. The Santa Monica quake was shallower than Thursday's quake at a depth of 5.5 miles.

Retired USGS seismologist Lucy Jones said 3.0 earthquakes happen every week in California, but Californians should still prepare for the "big one" because it will happen sooner or later.

"I'm not trying to terrify. I'm trying to inspire action that will prevent our scenarios from coming true," she said in a keynote speech to international scientists in Japan on May 21.
