Authorities Search for Man in Malibu Waters

The sheriff's station received a call from the 66-year-old man's phone. The caller said he was off the Malibu coast with chest pains. An overturned kayak and life vest were found 30 minutes later.

A 66-year-old man who may have called the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station on Thursday to say he had chest pains and was off the Malibu coast is missing. There is a joint effort to find the man, whose name was not released, by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Los Angeles County fire and sheriff's departments.

Authorities began the search after the sheriff's station received the call at approximately 3 p.m., Lt. Robert Wiard wrote in an email to Malibu Patch. Thirty minutes later, an overturned kayak and a life vest were found two miles off the shore.

It was soon determined that the man had rented a kayak from a local shop, and had not returned it, Wiard wrote. The man's vehicle was found in a local parking lot. It was also determined the phone call to the sheriff's station was made from the man's phone.
