40-Acre Brush Fire In Malibu About 95% Contained

Firefighters are on scene of a brush fire near Pacific Coast Highway and Sweetwater Canyon Road in Malibu.

MALIBU, CA — The Sweetwater Fire is about 95 percent contained as of about 3 p.m. Friday afternoon and forward progress has stopped, the City of Malibu said. Hundreds of firefighters battled the blaze, which broke out about 11:30 a.m. and quickly ballooned to 40 acres on Pacific Coast Highway and Sweetwater Canyon Road in Malibu

No structures were threatened and no evacuations were ordered during the two-alarm fire.

Two L.A. County Fire Department helicopters were dispatched to the scene to drop water on the area late Friday morning, but the blaze was upgraded to a second alarm fire before noon.

Fire commanders requested additional personnel, along with two fixed-wing aircrafts and another helicopter. The fixed-wing tankers were en route from Hemet and arrived about 20 minutes later, fire officials said.

Reports of a potential second blaze nearby remain unconfirmed — a fire official told the Times firefighters believe smoke from the Sweetwater Fire may be giving the appearance of a second fire near 2100 Stunt Road.

The projected weather conditions at the site of the fire are a maximum temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit, with south/southwest winds from 6-12 miles per hour, the National Weather Service tweeted.

The start of the fire remained unknown.
