Camarillo Fire: Laguna Fire Burns 50 Acres West Of Malibu

A brush fire broke out west of Malibu Thursday morning, sending smoke across Ventura and Los Angeles counties.

CAMARILLO, CA — A brush fire burned about 50 acres Thursday morning near Camarillo and the Cal State Channel Islands campus before firefighters were able to stop it from spreading, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The fire, dubbed the Laguna Fire, broke out in a largely agricultural area west of the mountainous Point Mugu State Park and south of Camarillo after 9 a.m. Thursday, according to authorities.

Evacuation orders for Cal State Channel Islands and University Glen were downgraded to warnings around noon, the Times reported.

"Firefighters are aggressively attacking the fire from the air and ground with additional resources assessing and mitigating any potential structure threats in the immediate area," Ventura County Fire officials said on social media earlier Thursday.

The fire broke out amid ongoing Red Flag conditions that that have battered Southern California with punishing winds for several weeks.
