Four Seek Malibu Council Seats [Video]

There is expected to be at least one incumbent in the race for three seats on the Malibu City Council.

A former council member, a current council member and two people new to the Malibu political scene have announced their intentions to run for . Four people picked up nomination papers from  during the first two days of the nomination period, which began on Monday.

The potential candidates are Council member Jefferson "Zuma Jay" Wagner, former Council member Joan House, Andy Lyon and "Malibu" Hamish "The Illusion" Patterson. Wagner must return the nomination papers along with the signatures of 20 registered Malibu voters by Jan. 13. All others have until Jan. 18 to complete the process.

All four people who have pulled papers said they are running. In every council campaign, there are a few people who pull papers, but do not return them.

The election is for three seats. Incumbents Wagner and John Sibert are eligible to run. Pamela Coney Ulich is termed-out. Election Day is April 10

Patterson said he has lived in Malibu on and off since 1986. He has been involved in  in Malibu. Patterson has a cult following in Malibu and elsewhere due to his many videos posted on YouTube in which he speaks about a range of issues, including skateboarding and local politics.

Lyon is a third-generation Malibu resident, surfer and realtor. He is a vocal opponent of , and has repeatedly said that the city should have gotten involved to stop it. against the state-run project in October. It is expected to begin in June. Lyon has said he would chain himself to a bulldozer to prevent the project from starting.

served on the council from 1992 to 2004, and is tied with Jeff Jennings for the Malibu record for number of years served on the dais. She has been on the  since 2006, and has remained involved in city politics.

Wagner, who owns , was elected to the council in 2008. He told Malibu Patch that his two main goals for a second term would be to get a viewshed ordinance passed and for the city to acquire a beach.

Sibert told Malibu Patch on Tuesday that he has not decided whether he will run for a second term. However, he did submit a form to City Hall last month that allows him to seek campaign contributions. Sibert said he expects to make a decision on his council future by the end of the week.

Missy Zeitsoff, who served on the first council that was elected in 1990, has also said she might run. that there is a 75 percent change she will enter the race.
