Lawson, Villablanca Recognized With Malibu Citizenship Award
Malibu recognized Coach Richard Lawson and Parks and Recreation Commissioner Judy Villablanca for their contributions to the city.

MALIBU, CA — The city of Malibu recognized Malibu High School Coach Richard Lawson and Parks and Recreation Commissioner Judy Villablanca for their standout contributions to the community.
The annual Jake Kuredjian Citizenship Award goes to an "outstanding individual or group who give[s] their time and resources to enhance the quality of recreation programs within the Malibu community," according to the city's website.
The award was created in 2002 in honor of Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Hagop "Jake" Kuredjian, who was killed during a shootout with a suspect, according to the city of Malibu. Kurdejian had previously been awarded a Gold Meritorious Conduct Medal for his efforts to rescue a woman from a Malibu cliff, according to the city.

"I could not have asked for a better coach, mentor or role model. Thank yo so much Coach," Skophammer said. Skophammer is a former student of Lawson's.
Lawson has also been a surf instructor with Malibu since 2006. Lawson focuses on physical and mental growth to facilitate positive outcomes for the kids he coaches and teaches, Skophammer said.
"At the end of the day the smile on the kids' faces, that's what it's all about," Lawson said.
Council member Karen Farrer said Lawson has been a key figure for facilitating partnership between Malibu Middle and High School and the greater community. His generous attitude, love of working with youth and enthusiasm all shine through his work, Farrer said.
Judy Villablanca
Juldy Villablanca has served on the Parks and Recreation Commission for over five years, working on a number of key projects including bringing skate parks to Malibu. Additionally, Villablanca worked to restore native habitats in Malibu Parks and volunteers with the Malibu Monarch Project and Westside German Shepherd Rescue.
The temporary and permanent skate parks, she said, have been her most exciting project. Skating has become Malibu's "signature sport" with significant participation, she said.
"It's been a pleasure to live in Malibu and I love this community and I hope I will continue to get a chance to contribute back to it," Villablanca said.
Villablanca has been instrumental in helping the city handle environmental issues, particularly working with the California Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, according to council member Steve Uhring.
"She has just been an invaluable asset to Malibu," Uhring said. "I hope we can find ways to have you contribute your contributions in the future. Thank you very, very much."
